Basketball Plays - 2 Top Youth Level Out Of Bounds Plays

By cassey64

These two simple yet effective out of bounds basketball plays can be used by coaches at the youth and high school levels with great success in most circumstances.

The first play is designed specifically to exploit teams that play zone defense against the baseline inbounds pass. Since almost every team's defensive alignment resembles a 2-3 zone against the baseline out of bounds, we dont worry about what kind of zone defense the opponent is playing - we're exploiting the same weaknesses no matter what.

The second play is designed specifically to exploit teams that match up to defend the baseline inbounds pass.

Both plays are extremely simple and deceptively effective; together they provide a complete attack against both zone and man defenses.

Play 1 vs. Zone Defenses: Stack

Stack is used against zone defenses.

The basic idea is that we want to

  • draw a defender out to the corner to defend our shooters
  • Aggressively Screen the basket defender in the zone.
  • Find the open player stepping into the gap created by the preceding action
  1. 3 inbounds. 2 stands in front of the stack, followed by 5, 4, and 1.  Players should stack tightly (close to each other)

 2.   2 steps to the corner looking for the shot and looking to draw a defender with him.

3.   5 steps into the lane and agressively screens the first opponenet he finds.

4.  4 steps into the hole for the layup

5.  1 srops back as a safety.

Best Play Against Man To Man Defense - Flat

Flat gets us 4-`0 points every game we play against man to man out of bounds defenses.

We start in a flat set.

  • The ballside corner player is usually our best shooter and is instructed to make it look like he is going to receivce a pass for a corenr jumper - because we want him to distracthis defender and minimize the amount of help in the paint
  • The ball;side post play extends his outside arm as if he is looking for the lob pass. At the same time, he take 2 dhort steps up the lane away from the baseline. to set up the back screen.
  • After 4 has taken 2 short steps up the lane and sold the lob, 5 steps across the lane and sets a back pick for 5.
  • 4 reverse pivots and spins off the back pick to the basket. If he has doner a good job of selling the lob pass, he will often find himself wide open for the layup off the backpick.
  • If 5's man cheats and trys to help cover 4 on the backpick, then 5 should be open stepping to the ball after the screen.

The plays will yield 4-10 points a game in most situations fortteams that execute them at the proper times with the proper level of execution.
